課程目標

CourseObjectives:Thiscourseisdesignedtogiveageneralsurveyofcurrentsyntactictheories,withaspecialemphasisonfunctionalapproachestogrammar.Itaimstoexplorethedifferencesbetween'formal'and'functional'paradigmsforsyntacticanalysis,withathoroughdiscussionoftheir1)theoreticalpremises,2)researchconcerns,3)datacollection4)analyticalmethodology,and5)explanatoryprinciples.Thefirsthalfoftheclasswillfocusonform-functionassociationsasmanifestedintheEnglishgrammar.Thesecondhalfwillthenintroduceavarietyoffunctionalexplanatorymechanismswithillustrationsfromawiderangeoflanguages.Theultimategoalofthisclassistofamiliarizestudentswithcontemporarysyntactictheoriesthattakegrammarascodingdevicesforcoherentcommunication.
