ThiscourseisprovidedbyNCTUDepartmentofAppliedChemistry.Generalchemistryexploreschemicalphenomenaintermsofatomicmodelsandquantummechanics,includingtheformationofchemicalbonds,theshapeofatoms,threestatesofmatter,andthermalequilibrium.

Inthissemester,wewilltalkaboutthehistoryofatomicmodels;introduceparticlesandparticledualism,andthequantumtheoryinembryo;learnaboutthedifferencebetweenclassicaldynamicequationsandSchr?dingerequationalongwiththesimplestexamplesofSchr?dingerequation;andderivethehydrogenatom'senergylevelthroughSchr?dingerequation.Thenwe'llmoveontotopicslikewavefunctionsandtheorbitalofhydrogenatoms,theperiodicchartandtheelectronicconfigurationofchemicalelements,andperiodicityoftheelements,etc.Inchapter2,wefirstintroducetheformingofionicbonds,theideaofhowtobuildLewisStructure,andexceptionstotheoctetruleandchemicalbondproperties.Chapter3isanintroductiontovalence-shellelectronpairrepulsiontheory(VSEPR),valence-bondtheoryandmolecularorbitaltheory.Wehopestudentscanthusestablishasolidfoundationofchemicalknowledgeaftertakingthiscourse.
