Storage
Yourdataandnotesarestoredinregularfilesusingstandardformats(RTF,PDF,Webarchive,mbox,etc.),sothere’snolock-inorriskofdatabasecorruption,anditplayswellwithTimeMachine.
UsesMD5checksumstoverifytheintegrityofallfilesinthelibrary,forsafelong-termarchival.
Metadata(tags,titles,sourceURLs,etc.)goesintoaCoreDataSQLdatabaseforreliablestorageandquickaccess.
EagleFilerautomaticallybacksupthemetadataandnotestoXMLpropertylistfiles.Intherareeventthatthedatabasefilebecomesdamaged,youcanimportthefilesintoanewlibrary,andEagleFilerwillbuildanewdatabaseandreconstructallthemetadata.
CancopytagsintoOpenMetaandtheSpotlightcommentsfieldtomakethemsearchableandaccessibletootherapplications.
Encryption
LibrariescanbeencryptedwithAES-128orAES-256forsecure,password-protectedstorage.
EncryptedlibrariesarestoredusingApple’sdiskimagetechnology,sotheircontentsareaccessibleonanyMac,whetherornotEagleFilerisinstalled.
Theentirelibrarycontents—includingthemetadata,indexes,andtemporaryfiles—areencrypted.Unencrypteddatanevertouchesthedisk.
Inotherrespects,anencryptedlibraryworksjustlikearegularone.It’sstillfullysearchable,andthefilesarestillaccessibletootherapplications(onceyou’veenteredthepassphrase).
Search
EagleFilerusesitsownoptimizedindexessothatyoucansearchthecontentsofyourlibraryfasterthanwithSpotlight.
Youcandoexactsearchesacrossindividualfields(title,filename,notes,tags,from,to/cc)aswellassearchesacrosstheentirefilecontents.
Searchescanusephrases,wildcards,BooleanAND/OR/NOT,andgrouping.
Createyourownsmartfoldersandorganizethemintofolders.Customsmartfolderscancontainanunlimitednumberofcriteria,optionallyusingnestedAny/All/None.Youcandefineactionstooccurwhenyoudragarecordontoasmartfolder.
Matchingsearchtermsarehighlightedinthedocumentcontentsandintherecordslist.UsetheFindpaneltosearchwithinadocument.
EagleFilerreadsmostfilesitself,soitcanindextextthatSpotlightwouldn’tsee(e.g.SkimnotesattachedtoPDFfiles).Itautomaticallytakesadvantageofthird-partySpotlightimporterplug-instosupportcustomfileformats.
Sincethefilesandnotesarestoredoutintheopen,they’realsosearchablewithSpotlight(forwhenyouwanttosearchyourentireMacatonce),withouttheneedforstubfilesintheCaches/Metadatafolder.

Foreachfile,EagleFilerrecordsthedocumenttitle,author/from,andsourceURL.
Youcanassigntags(a.k.a.keywords).Tagscanhaveabbreviationsymbolsandcolors,andtheycanbenested.Quicklyassigntagsbytyping(withauto-completion),drag-and-drop,orbyclickingonthemintheTagCloud.
Eachfileormailmessagecanhavenotes,whichcanincluderichtext,clickablelinks,images,andtables.
Eachfilecanhaveacoloredlabel,whichalsoshowsupintheFinder.
YoucancopylinkstoEagleFilerrecordsandpastethemintonotesorRTFfiles,orintootherapplications.
Whenimportingviathecapturekey,EagleFilercanpreservemetadata(e.g.tags,notes,titles,URLs)fromthesourceapplication.Thisisoftenhigherfidelitythanusingthatapplication’sownexportfeature.
Whenimportinganexistingfile,EagleFilercanimporttagsandnotesfromthefile’sSpotlightcomments.
